She made her debut as a chorus girl in Happy Days in 1929. At the age of 13, she signed with Samuel Goldwyn and she was cast in the mega-hit film, Whoopee in 1930. In 1932, she signed with RKO Radio Pictures and her first film for the studio was Probation in 1932. In 1936, she appeared in the comedy, Pigskin Parade. She got wider recognition and became very famous for appearing in the musical, DuBarry Was a Lady. In 1940, she appeared in the musical film, Down Argentine Way as a female lead. She got success as a pin-up girl as a mainstream movie star. In the 1950s, her career began to decline. In 1952, she appeared in the musical comedy, The Girl Next Door. She got fame for being cast in the romantic comedy, How to Marry a Millionaire. Her last film was How to Be Very, Very Popular that released in 1955. After that, she appeared in several television series and stage productions.
From 1937-1939, she was married to Jackie Coogan. She married Harry James with whom she had two daughters but they divorced in 1965.
On 2nd July in 1973, she died of lung cancer at the age of 56.
