At the age of 16, she was signed with the Fox Film Corporation and she appeared in several bit parts in the films with Fox. She first got her major role in the drama, Marriage in Transit in 1925. From 1925-1927, she appeared in 15 short films and she got a prominent role in Ned McCobb’s Daughter in 1928. The following year, she appeared in her first talking role in High Voltage. She then began to work with Paramount and was cast in the comedy, It Pays to Advertise in 1931. Her turning point in her career came with the film, Twentieth Century in 1934. She became the most successful and one of the most highest-paid actresses then. In 1936, she appeared in My Man Godfrey for which she was nominated for an Academy Award. In 1940, she appeared in the film, Virgil in the Night. Her last film appearance was in To be or Not to Be in 1942.
From 1931-1933, she was married to William Powell. Later in 139, she married Clark Gable.
