After that, she appeared in several uncredited roles in several films but eventually, she moved up the ranks and began to receive better roles and she became a popular actress in Hollywood. She had a supporting role in So Big in 1953. She was cast in the musical comedy, Lucky Me in 1954. That year, she played the role of Elizabeth Tyson in the Oscar-winning film, Sabrina. She had a supporting role in the war story, Battle Hymn in 1957. She got famous for playing the role of Gwen French in the film, Some Came Running in 1958 for which she was nominated for the Academy Award. In 1961, she appeared in the comedy, The Last Time I Saw Archie. After turning 40, she had trouble finding good roles and she worked mainly in television and American B-movies. In 1966, she appeared in The Chase and she also guest-starred in The Beverly Hillbillies. She was cast in the crime drama, The Happening. Her final film was The Day of the Wolves that was released in 1971 and her final television role was in McCloud in 1974. At the age of 50, she took retirement from acting.
From 1951-1954, she was married to C. Ray Stahl. Later in 1966, she married Hal B. Wallis and they remained married till his death in 1986.
On 31st May in 2014, she died from natural causes.
She has received the Golden Laurel Award and Bronze Wrangler Award.
