Born on December 19, 1963 in Chicago, Illinois (south side), Jennifer Beals is an American actress. her mother Jeanne was an elementary school teacher, and her father Alfred Beals owned grocery stores. While her father was black, her mother is Irish-American. Her father passed away when she was only ten, and her mother married Edward Cohen in 1981. According to Beals, her biracial heritage impacted her because she “always lived sort of on the outside” with the assumption “of being the other in society.” She landed her first job at age 13 in an ice-cream store. She used her height at that time to make her boss believe that she was 16.

Two incidents motivated Beals to become an actress: working on a high school production of Fiddler on the Roof and seeing Balm in Gilead with Joan Allen when she was volunteer-ushering in the Steppenwolf Theatre.

Beals did her graduation from the progressive Francis W. Parker School. She also got selected to attend the prestigious Goodman Theatre Young People’s Drama Workshop. Beals went to Yale University, and received a B.A. in American Literature in 1987. She had to defer a term to accommodate the movie Flashdance. At Yale, Beals was a resident of Morse College.

She debuted in movies in 1980 film My Bodyguard, before she was critically acclaimed for her performance in Flashdance (1983). She went on to win NAACP Image Award for Actress and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Comedy or Musical for that performance.

Beals made various appearances in well-received movies such as Devil in a Blue Dress (1995), The Last Days of Disco (1998), Roger Dodger (2002), The Book of Eli (2010), and Before I Fall (2017).

She played the role of Bette Porter on the Showtime drama series The L Word (2004-2009). She also later starred in the series The Chicago Code (2011), Proof (2015), and Taken (2017).
