The well known American singer, songwriter, rapper, record producer, actress and model, Janelle Monae Robinson was born on December 1, 1985. She is in a contract with her own label, Wondaland Arts Society, and Atlantic Records. Janelle’s first unofficial studio album was The Audition, and it was followed by her public debut with a conceptual EP called Metropolis: Suite (The Chase), which reached a top ranking of 115 on the Billboard 200 in the US.
Her first full-length studio album the ArchAndroid which was a concept album sequel to her initial EP, released to great critical acclaim in 2010. Bad Boy Records released it, and it managed to reach number 17 on the Billboard 200. Monae was featured as a guest singer in “We Are Young” by Fun, and it climbed to the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 which was her first appearance in the chart. Back in August 2012, she became the spokeswoman for CoverGirl. Her second studio album titled The Electric Lady came out in September 2013, and it also received a lot of critical acclaim. Monae has acted in two movies, Hidden Figures, and Moonlight.
Monae came out with her third studio album, Dirty Computer, this year on April 27. It was preceded by various singles such as Django Jane, Make Me Feel, I Like That and Pynk. Monae has been nominated for Grammy Awards six times.
Back in 2011, during an interview with London Evening Standard, she had said that she “only dates androids,” an apparent reference to her alter-ego seen in several songs of her. She went on to say, “I speak about androids because I think the android represents the new ‘Other.’ You can compare it to being a lesbian or being a gay man or being a black woman… what I want is for people who feel oppressed or feel like the ‘Other’ to connect with the music and to feel like, ‘She represents who I am.’”
She had further said that she would discuss her sexuality “in due time.” Back in 2013, she said that she wishes both sexes to “still be attracted to [her]” and declared her support for the LGBTQ community.
While talking to Rolling Stone in April this year, Monae had this to say about her sexuality: “Being a queer black woman in America—someone who has been in relationships with both men and women—I consider myself to be a free-ass motherfucker.” She claimed that she resonated with bisexuality and pansexuality.
Presently, she is in a relationship with actress Tessa Thompson (Thor: Ragnarok). Tessa has confirmed the same during an exclusive interview.
