Born on June 24, 1979 in Cambridge, Massachusetts as Vera Mindy Chokalingam, she is an American actress, comedian, and writer Mindy Kaling. Her parents are from India and they had met while working in the same hospital in Nigeria. The family moved to the United States in 1979.
According to Kaling, she has never been called as Vera, her first name, but, she has been called as Mindy since her mother was pregnant when her parents were in Nigeria. They had already decided to move to the United States and wanted, “a cute American name” for their daughter, and picked the name Mindy from the TV show Mork & Mindy. Kaling graduated from Buckingham Browne & Nichols, a private school in Cambridge. In 1997, she entered Dartmouth College, where she was a member of the comedy troupe The Dog Day Players and a cappellagroup The Rockapellas. She created the comic strip Badly Drawn Girl in The Dartmouth (daily newspaper of the college), and also wrote for the Dartmouth Jack-O-Lantern (the humor magazine of the college). She graduated from Dartmouth in 2001 with a Bachelor’s degree in playwriting. She was a classics major for most of her college and studied Latin, a subject that she has been learning since she was in the seventh grade. From 2005 to 2013, she played the role of Kelly Kapoor in the NBC sitcom The Office. Apart from acting in it, she was also the writer, executive producer, and occasional director. Her work in The Office was recognized in the form of a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series in 2010.
She became more renowned for creating, writing, producing and starring in the Fox/Hulu comedy series The Mindy Project (2012-2017). In the year 2018, she started serving as the co-creator, writer, and producer for the sitcom Champions, in which she also plays a recurring role. Her movie career includes voice work in the movies Despicable Me (2010), Wreck It Ralph (2012), and Inside Out (2015) as well as starring roles in the fantasy movie A Wrinkle in Time and the heist comedy Ocean’s 8 (both in 2018). Apart from her film and TV work, she has also written two New York Times best-selling memoirs, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) in 2011, and Why Not Me? (2015). In 2012, Kaling was on the Time 100 list of influential peple, and in 2014, she was one of Glamour magazine’s Women of the Year. she owns 1% of Swansea City A.F.C., a Welsh football team based in Swansea, Wales. Her daughter Katherine was born on December 15, 2017, however, it is not known who the baby’s father is and at the time of her pregnancy, she was not in a public relationship with anyone. She received the honorary degree of the Doctor of Humane Letters from Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire on June 10, 2018.
