Born as Natalia Nikolaevna Zakharenko on July 20, 1938 in San Francisco to Russian immigrant parents, she was an American actress. Wood’s movie career started as a child and she became a successful Hollywood star as a young adult, and was nominated for three Academy Awards before she turned 25. She started acting in the movies when she was four-years-old and as an eight year old she co-starred in the 1947 Christmas classic movie Miracle on 34th Street. As a teenager her performance in Rebel Without a Cause (1955) got her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress nomination. She starred in the musical movies West Side Story (1961) and Gypsy (1962), and she also received Academy Award for Best Actress nominations for her performances in Splendor in the Grass (1961) and Love With The Proper Stranger (1963). Her career advanced with movies like Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (1969). After this, she took a break from acting and had two children with different husbands, and during the 1970s, she was seen in only three movies. She was married to actor Robert Wagner and then to producer Richard Gregson, and then back to Wagner. She had a daughter with Gregson, actress Natasha Gregson Wagner. Wood gave birth to her daughter Courtney Wagner during her second marriage to Wagner. Wood also starred in a number of TV productions, including a remake of the movie From Here to Eternity (1979), which got her a Golden Globe Award. Throughout her career, her films symbolized a ‘coming of age’ for her as well as Hollywood movies in general.

Wood was with her husband Robert Wagner, her Brainstorm co-star Christopher Walken, and Splendour’s captain Dennis Davern on the evening of November 28, 1981 when she drowned to death, at the age of 43. The events surrounding her death have been extremely controversial due to contradicting statements by the witnesses. In 2012, the LASD declared the cause of her death as “drowning and other undetermined factors.” According to Davern, Wagner was responsible for Wood’s death. Wagner refused any wrongdoing, but, he was named a person of interest in the investigation in February 2018.
