Born as Famke Beumer Janssen in Amstelveen, Netherlands in the year 1964, she is a Dutch actress, director, screenwriter, and ex-fashion model. Femke has two sisters, director Antoinette Beumer and actress Marjolein Beumer, who changed their surnames after the divorce of their parents, but, Famke didn’t do so as she didn’t want “Beumer” as a surname impacting her career potential on international level. Apart from her native language Dutch, Janssen speaks English and French. She also learned German, but, didn’t keep up with it. After her high school graduation, she studied economics for a year at the University of Amsterdam and she later called it to be “the stupidest idea I ever had.” She enrolled at Columbia University in the 1990s to study creative writing and literature and graduated with a bachelor of arts degree. In the year 1984, she relocated to the USA to start working as a professional model. She signed with Elite Model Management and worked for Yves Saint Laurent, Giorgio Armani, Chanel and Victoria’s Secret. She also starred in a commercial for the perfume ‘Exclamation by Coty Inc. in 1988. She has been compared with Hedy Lamarr and other film stars from the 1940s. After she gave up modelling in early 1990s, Janssen played guest roles on various TV series including a starring role in the 1992 episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, titled ‘The Perfect Mate” where she played an empathic metamorph named Kamala opposite Patrick Stewart with whom she was later cast in the X-Men movie franchise. In the same year, Janssen was offered the role of Jadzia Dax in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, but, she rejected it as she wanted to focus on movie roles. Her first film role was alongside Jeff Goldblum in the 1992 film Fathers & Sons.
She played the role of Xenia Onatopp in Golden Eye (1995, JeanGrey/Phoenix in the X-Men movies (2000-2014), Ava Moore on Nip/Tuck and Lenore Mills in the Taken trilogy (2008-2014). In the year 2008, United Nations appointed her as a Goodwill Ambassador for Integrity. She debuted as a director with Bringing Up Bobby (2011). She is also famous for playing a role in the Netflix original series Hemlock Grove and for ABC’s How To Get Away With Murder. Janssen played a starring role in the 2017 NBC crime thriller The Blacklist Redemption.
Janssen had been married to writer and director Kip Williams, son of architect Tod Williams from 1995 to 2000.
