Born as Ellen Martijin Hoog on March 26, 1986, she is a former Dutch field hockey player. Right from the very early days, Ellen had a hockey stick in her hand. At the age of seven years, she had started playing hockey officially, at Hockeyclub SCHC in Bilthoven, where she played until the age of 21. From 2007 to May 2017, she played at AH & BC in Amstelveen. She was 17-years-old when in 2004, Ellen debuted with the Dutch national team that played a four-country tournament in Argentina. She joined the national team in 2004, and won Olympic gold medals in 2008 and 2012, as well as a silver medal in 2016. Ellen is a member of the Amsterdamsche Hockey & Bandy Club.

In August 2005, she had become European Champion in Dublin, Ireland and in December 2005, she won the Champions Trophy in Canberra, Australia as a member of the Dutch National Women’s Team. She was also among the players of the Dutch team that became World Champion at the 2006 Women’s Hockey World Cup. Her father died of cancer, a week after she had won the European Championship in Ireland. After he died, she found it difficult to come to terms with her normal life, but, recovered enough to return to playing when the new season started in October 2005.

In the year 2012, Hoog became the first player to decide a major championship match with a penalty shootout when she took the winning shot in the 2012 Summer Olympics semi-final against New Zealand. She did the same thing once again when she hit the winning shot in the 2016 Summer Olympics semi final against Germany. Hoog was sponsored by Ritual Hockey. After having played in scores of tournaments, 233 international matches for her country wherein she scored 60 goals, Ellen Hoog retired from international career.
