Born as Winifred Jacqueline Fraser Bisset, in Weybridge, Surrey, England, she is the daughter of Max Fraser Bisset, a general practitioner, and Arlette Alexander, a lawyer-turned-housewife. Her mother had French and English lineage, and her father was of Scottish origins. Bisset’s mother cycled from Paris and got on board a British troop transport to escape from the Germans during the World War II.
Bisset was raised in Tilehurst, near Reading in Berkshire, England, in a 17th century country cottage, where she still resides for some part of a year. she was educated at the lycee Francais in London. She took ballet lessons as a child and started taking acting classes while working as a fashion model to pay for them. Bisset’s parents separated in 1968. Her father died in 1982, and her mother died in 1999. Her acting career started in 1965, and she first became famous with roles in films like The Detective, Bullitt, and The Sweet Ride for which she was nominated as the most promising newcomer Golden Globe award. During the 1970s Bisset starred in Airport (1970), Day For Night (1973), which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, Murder on the Orient Express (1974), The Deep (1977), and Who Is Killing The Great Chefs of Europe? (1978), which landed her a Golden Globe nomination as Best Actress in a Comedy.
Her other notable movie and television credits include Rich and Famous (1981), Golden Globe nominated role in Under the Volcano (1984), Cesar-nominated role in La Ceremonie (1995), Emmy-nominated role in the miniseries Joan of Arc (1999), and the BBC miniseries Dancing on the Edge (013), for which she won a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress (TV).
She was honoured with the highest honor of France, The Legion D’Honneur in 2010. Jacqueline is fluent in English, French and Italian. Although she has never married, she had long romantic relationships with French-Canadian actor Micahel Sarrazin, Moroccan real estate tycoon Victor Drai, Russian dancer/actor Alexander Godunoy, Swiss actor Vincent Perez and Turkish martial arts instructor Emin Bozlepe.
