Born on December 6, 1972 as Sarah Gray Rafferty, she is an American television and film actress. Rafferty was the youngest of four daughters of Mary Lee Rafferty and Michael Griffith Rafferty Jr. and she spent her childhood in the Riverside neighborhood of Greenwich, Connecticut. She credits her parents for igniting her passion for the arts. Her elder sisters are Maura, Ann and Constance.
Rafferty studied at the Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, and graduated in 1989. She majored in English and Theatre at Hamilton College, and studied theatre in the United Kingdom and at the University of Oxford during her junior year, and also after she graduated magna cum laude from Hamilton in 1993. She further studied at the Yale School of Drama, and received a Master of Fine Arts degree.
Rafferty is married to Aleksanteri Olli-Pekka Seppala, an American of Finnish origins, who works as a stock research analyst in the asset management unit of Lazard Freres & Company. They had married on June 23, 2001, at the Roman Catholic Church of St. Mary in Greenwich, Connecticut. They have two daughters, Oona Gray (born on October 22, 2007) and Iris Friday (born in January 2012).
She has been friends with her Suits co-star Gabriel Macht for more than 25 years. They had first met at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in 1993.
