Born on September 25, 1997, Suzanne Schulting is a Dutch short track speed skater. During the 2018 Winter Olympics, she won the first ever gold for Netherlands in the short track speed skating and became one of the youngest ever Dutch Winter Olympic champions.
Schulting took up short track speed skating as an eight year old in Thiaif, Heerenveen. She won the gold medal at the 1500 m event during the 2016 World Junior Championships held in Sofia. At the 2018, Winter Olympics, Schulting won a bronze medal in the women’s 3000 metre relay, and a gold medal in the women’s 1000 metres. This was the first time ever for her country to have won a gold medal in short track speed skating. At the age of twenty, she is the second youngest Dutch gold medallist in any discipline at the Winter Olympics.
In October 2018, Schulting announced that she would be joining speed skating team, Team IKO for a part of the 2018/19 season. She had plans to compete in speed skating as well as the short track in the 2018/19 season, and she was inspired by compatriot Jorien Ter Mors, but, she also stated that short track remains her focus. “Jorien is a pioneer in this field. I do not know exactly how I can develop on the long track, but, as a girl I always dreamed of being able to compete as a speed skater for the medals, and we’re going to see how it goes, but, short track stays at number one.” In December 2018, Schulting was named as the Dutch Sportswoman of the Year.
