Born as Catriona Elisa Magnayon Gray on 6 January 1994, she is a Filipino- Australian model, stage actress, singer, visual artist and a beauty pageant titleholder who won the Miss Universe 2018 pageant. She is the fourth Filipina to win the crown. Before her, Gray was the winner of Miss World Philippines 2016.
Gray was born in Cairns, Queensland, Australia to a Scottish origins father, Ian Gray from Fraserburgh, and a Filipina mother named Normita Ragas Magnayon from Oas, Albay. Gray is named after her paternal grandmother, Catherine Gray, who had immigrated to Western Australia from Scotland in the year 1952.
Gray studied at Trinity Anglican School in Cairns where she used to be a house captain and a school chorister. She received a master’s certificate in music theory from the online school of Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Further, she got a certificate in outdoor recreation and a black belt in Choi Kwang-Do martial arts. Not only that, Gray also happened to be the lead singer of her school’s jazz band, and starred in local productions of Miss Saigon. After she graduated from high school, she relocated to Manila where she worked as a commercial model.
On 18 March 2018, she won the crown of Miss Universe Philippines 2018 by the outgoing titleholder Rachel Peters. Gray was the representative of Philippines in the 2018 Miss Universe contest on 17 December 2018 organized at IMPACT Arena, Muang Thong Thaniin Nonthaburi Province, Thailand. Eventually, Gray won the competition and she was crowned by the outgoing crown holder Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters of South Africa. She is the fourth girl from Philippines to win the Miss Universe pageant after Gloria Diaz (1969), Margarita Moran (1973) and Pia Wurtzbach in 2015.
