Born as Phoebe Belle Cates on July 16, 1963 in New York City, she is a former American movie actress, singer and model renowned for her work in many 1980s movies such as Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and Gremlins.

Cates was born in a family of television and Broadway production people. Her father Joseph Cates was a major Broadway producer and a path-breaking television personality. Her late uncle, Gilbert Cates, produced a number of TV specials, often in tandem with his brother, and also many annual Academy Awards shows.

Cates went to the Hewitt School, the Professional Children’s School, and the Julliard School. At the age of ten, she desired to become a dancer.
