She again was nominated for the Academy Award for her role in the film, The Pride of the Yankee. She has received the Academy Award for her performance in the film, Mrs. Miniver. She got fame for appearing in Alfred Hitchcock’s film, Shadow of a Doubt in 1943. In the 1950s, she appeared in several unsuccessful films including California Conquest, Count the Hours, The Actress, Track of the Cat, The Steel Trap, etc. In 1955, she was cast in the role of Doris Walker in the classic, Miracle on 34th Street. She has been inducted into Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. She also appeared in several television series including The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, The Defenders, CBS Playhouse, Bonanza, etc. In 1975, she appeared in the Broadway revival of Death of a Salesman. She appeared in her last film, The Rainmaker in 1997.
From 1942-1952, she was married to Niven Busch with whom she had two children. Later in 1959, she married Robert Anderson but got divorced in 1978.
On 6th March in 2005, she died of a heart attack at the age of 86.
Apart from the Academy Award, she won the NBR Award twice.
