She first visited Hollywood in 1929 and she appeared as an extra in two films, the short film, Berth Marks, and the drama, The Locked Door both in 1929. In 1930, she signed a contract with Samuel Goldwyn and appeared as a Goldwyn Girl in Whoopee that year. For Paramount, she appeared in Ladies of the Big House and The Girl Habit in 1931 and for Goldwyn, she appeared in Palmy Days in 1931. In 1934, she began to date Charlie Chaplin and she started getting media attention. She was cast as Chaplin’s leading lady in Modern Times in 1936 and she got many positive reviews for her performance. After the success of Modern Times, she was cast in the comedy, The Young in Heart. She signed with Paramount and appeared in The Cat and the Canary in 1939. She again appeared with Chaplin in The Great Dictator in 1940. In 1942, she played the leading role in Reap in Wild Wind. She received an Academy Award nomination for appearing in So Proudly We Hail in 1943. In 1948, she starred in On Our Merry Way. She also starred in The Torch in 1950 and she went to England to appear in Babes in Bagdad in 1952. She also appeared in several TV series including Sherlock Holmes, The Joseph Cotton Show, The Ford Television Theatre, The Phantom, etc.
She has married four times to Edgar James, Charlie Chaplin, Burgess Meredith, and Erich Maria Remarque. She had no children.
On 23rd April in 1990, she died of heart failure while under respiratory support for emphysema.
